What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica is not a specific disease but a collection of symptoms and physical impairments caused by the compression of the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve branches off from the spinal cord and innervates the right and left legs, providing a neural pathway for both motor and sensory information.
The sciatic nerve can become compressed by several structures, including a herniated or bulging disc, a narrowed joint space (e.g., spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease), or, more rarely, a tumor or bony cyst.
How Will I Know if I Have Sciatica?
You may have sciatica if you notice signs and symptoms such as:
- pain, numbness, and tingling that shoots down one and rarely both legs
- weakness in one leg or foot (you might stumble more frequently or have a hard time lifting your toes)
- back pain and stiffness
- groin pain
These symptoms can get better or worse throughout the day.
Some people with these symptoms can also develop bowel or bladder incontinence and “saddle anesthesia” (reduced sensation in the groin and genital area). These symptoms indicate a rare but serious medical emergency called cauda equina syndrome. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call 911 right away.
Can a Chiropractor Treat Sciatica?
A chiropractor can treat sciatica using several non-invasive techniques and services. Generally, the goals of chiropractic care for sciatica are to reduce pressure on the sciatic nerve, allow the nerve to heal, alleviate symptoms, and prevent recurring issues. Our Tallahassee chiropractic team does this by providing services such as:
- spinal adjustments and non-surgical decompression to restore spinal alignment
- corrective exercises to improve stability and endurance of essential core musculature
- lifestyle guidance regarding topics like posture, stress, workplace ergonomics, and even nutrition
At our wellness clinic, we can also connect you with other services, including massage therapy, acupuncture, physical therapy, or even personalized care from a licensed medical doctor, in order to optimize whole-body health and help your nervous system drive the healing process.
