What is Osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a common condition that refers to the body's bones becoming weak and brittle due to loss of bone mass. This decline in bone mass can lead to a "stooped posture" which may increase the risk of fall due to the alteration of the body's center of gravity, as well as an increased risk of fractures especially in the wrists, hips, and spine which may lead to further chronic (long-term) pain and disability. Spinal fractures can even occur without falling! over the age of 50, one in two women, and one in 6 men will suffer an osteoporosis-related fracture at some point in their lives (American College of Rheumatology).

Who's at risk for osteoporosis?
Individuals at risk include:
- Post-menopausal women
- Men over the age of 65
- Non-Hispanic white or Asian Race
- Smaller body frame size
- Family history: having a parent or sibling increases your risk, especially if your mother or father have sustained a hip fracture
- Life style: sedentary life style, excessive alcohol consumption, tobacco.
